چکیده

Gymnacranthera canarica (King.) Warb. is an endemic tree species that dominates the Myristica swamp ecosystem of southern Western Ghats. This tropical has become more threatened due to limited natural seed germination and habitat loss. Mature seeds were collected from myristica subjected desiccation study. research evaluated physiological (moisture content, tetrazolium reduction, lipid peroxidation, electrolyte leakage) biochemical response during different treatments. Results showed G. are highly sensitive total viability loss was seen within 15 days following harvest indicating active metabolism mature showing absence metabolic arrest. Desiccation enhanced malondialdehyde leakage while reducing formazan formation. Seed increases protease activity, which peaks when lost. reduced quantity phenol starch, whereas proline, fat, sucrose soluble carbohydrates increased. The early in could be membrane integrity, linked ROS formation associated peroxidation products truly recalcitrant.

Distribution of radionuclide in the forest soils (Western Ghats-India)

Background: The presence of radionuclides in the soil, measures need to be taken to minimize the radiation dose to humans. It is mostly gamma-emitting radionuclides that contribute to the radiation dose in long term behavior of these radionuclides in soil may determine the extent to which such countermeasures need to be applied. Materials and Methods: The activity concentration of these radionu...

Physiological and biochemical changes during the loss of desiccation tolerance in germinating Adenanthera pavonina L. seeds.

We investigated the loss of desiccation tolerance (DT) in Adenanthera pavonina seeds during germination. Seeds were subjected to imbibition for 0, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 81 h, then dried to their initial moisture content (13%), rehydrated and evaluated for survival (resumption of growth and development of normal seedlings) and membrane system integrity (electrolyte leakage). Embryonic axes of seeds...

Centennial rainfall variation in semi arid and tropical humid environments in the cardamom hill slopes, southern Western Ghats, India

Studies of rainfall variation generally focus on large areas. For example, in India, the area average monsoon rainfall series of the whole country or meteorological subdivisions are used. This would be of no use for local agriculture, particularly in places where rainfall is very high or very low, especially for crops like small cardamom and vanilla which are very sensitive to soil moisture and...

Deforestation and land use changes in Western Ghats, India

We estimated changes in forest cover between 1973 and 1995 in the southern part of the Western Ghats using satellite data. The study area of approximately 40,000 km showed a loss of 25.6% in forest cover over 22 years. The dense forest was reduced by 19.5% and open forest decreased by 33.2%. As a consequence, degraded forest increased by 26.64%. There has been a great deal of spatial variabilit...

Estimation of LAI and above-ground biomass in deciduous forests: Western Ghats of Karnataka, India

This study demonstrates the potentials of IRS P6 LISS-IV high-resolution multispectral sensor (IGFOV 6 m)-based estimation of biomass in the deciduous forests in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, India. Regression equations describing the relationship between IRS P6 LISS-IV data-based vegetation index (NDVI) and field measured leaf area index (ELAI) and estimated above-ground biomass (EAGB) were ...
